Opal Play

At Southwark, we are proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme, which helps us transform playtimes into rich, creative and inclusive experiences for every child. Through OPAL play, we aim to give children the freedom to explore, imagine and take manageable risks in a safe and stimulating outdoor environment. Risk–benefit assessments are carried out with the children through our weekly assemblies, helping them to understand how to play safely, make sensible choices and take responsibility for themselves and others. We also collectively create a play charter, setting out shared rules and expectations to ensure everyone can enjoy playtimes together. Our play spaces encourage teamwork, problem-solving and physical activity, while promoting wellbeing and happiness across the school day. We believe that play is a fundamental part of learning and development, and our commitment to OPAL ensures that every child has the opportunity to play in their own way, every day.
