Reading Records

SOUTHWARK NEWS!

Today is National Read a Book Day 2021 and to mark the occasion here at Southwark, we have a big announcement to make!

EVERY CHILD IN THE SCHOOL WILL BE RECEIVING A SOUTHWARK READING RECORD!

I’m sure you will have seen this sort of thing before and if you’re anything like me, you will have had one yourself when you were at primary school!

Reading is a fundamental life skill that unlocks the world around us and the single most important thing you can do to support your child’s learning at home is to read with them as much as you can. Because of the incredible support so many of you gave your children with home learning during lockdowns, we want to keep the ball rolling and at least take one positive from the last year and a half!

So, we will be asking all of you to read with your child 3+ times a week and then record this quickly is in your child’s Reading Record. This is the expectation for all children – from Nursery through to Year 6.

There will be assemblies tomorrow throughout the school to introduce these to children and give the Reading Records themselves out! Please, please help your child to keep these safe – they must not be lost or damaged.

Expect a couple of videos from me this week with some useful hints and tips with how to support your child whether they’re a developing reader or they’re already a confident reader. We can’t wait to give out the Reading Records tomorrow and see them being used by all of you to help your child make as much progress as they can.
